Is it possible to insert only one without dual when adding memory to the computer?

I'm using two 4G ones right now, and I'm thinking about buying another 8G one and putting it in, but I'm thinking about whether to do one 8G or two 4G ones.

I heard that I had to pair up before, so I put in two 4G pieces.

It would be better if I put only one 8G, so is it possible to add memory to the computer like this?
