Problems with no monitor

I got it because my friend has a monitor that she doesn't use and it doesn't turn on when I connect with the computer I'm using now...

The monitor is connected to dvi and the computer is connected to hdmi terminal.

Another strange thing is that the monitor turns on well when connected to d-sub terminal. Why?
