Where seats are not designated when booking an aircraft;

I'm using a low-cost airline this time, but low-cost airlines have to pay additional money to designate seats.

How do I designate seats if I don't pay and leave them alone?

Is it designated randomly?

Like falling down here and there even if it's a group?
