Why do gears change the number of characters in an auto car?

I'm riding an auto vehicle, but sometimes the gear singular number comes out and sometimes it doesn't come out, but why is that?

When it is not a gear fraction, it is marked as D.

I don't know if it's because of the mood, but when it is marked as D, the car doesn't seem to move well
