8G RAM but only 3.46G is recognized

I was told that adding RAM would speed up, so I bought 8G memory and plugged it in. When I go into my computer and check, it says I'm using 3.46G.

Why can't I use all 8G?

pu1. I think what I'm using now is a 32-bit window. In that case, I can only use about 3g of memory. You can install 64-bit windows, but only if your computer is 64-bit
