Do you recommend opening and closing the lid on a Windows laptop?

I've been using MacBook Air, and now I have a Windows laptop, and I'm curious about how to use standby power.

Can I use it in a way that opens it only when I use it and closes it when I don't use it, like MacBook Air?

Or do I have to shut down the system?
