Do I need to get a Chinese visa if I take a flight via China?

There are cheaper flights via China, and I know that even if you pass for a few hours like this, you do a simple immigration check-up and similar things at the airport.

I know that China originally needs a visa, but if I take a short layover, do I need a Chinese visa?
